Consequently, this reduces sources of potable water for domestic, commercial or industrial use which increases the need to desalinate seawater. Membrane Distillation (MD) is an emerging technology that uses low-temperature thermal energy for water desalination, it functions at near-ambient pressure and temperatures less than about 90°C using hydrophobic membranes. Low grade geothermal heat energy, which usually is wasted to the environment, can be a good source of thermal-energy for the MD technology. The application of Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) involving nanotechnology for the biomimetic membrane development. The sub-nano-meter based structure created by ALD with precise control can be fine-tuned for the interaction between water and ion which could lead to highly efficient water purification system. The ALD fabricated biomimetic membranes can demonstrate higher water flux which is more efficient than available commercial membranes. Therefore, lower energy desalination plan and high filtration can be achieved by this technology. Energy cost and CO2 emission can be reduced. |
